A totally recyclable, tree-free book!! I wish there was some sort of way that I could trade in ALL of my books for these ones! I lost an entire copy of Watership Down because of a bathtub accident. Check em out! Don’t doubt for a second that I haven’t already ordered Aqua Erotica!

That is so me, reading in the tub….what could be better? Water, aromatherapy and a good book….mmmmmmm. Many of my books are def. water damaged because of it.

I heard that if you suck on an ice cube before getting it, the water will feel warmer longer!
October 16th, 2006 at 4:37 pmMakes sense. Scuba divers have taken advantage of plastic pages for years. I’ve always thought paper is way too fragile around moisture… which is everywhere! Although paper lasts a lot longer than film stock.
October 16th, 2006 at 9:24 pmthe problem with this one, is that if it gets in the recycled paper stream, it gums up the machinery… companies like hp are using plastic paper for packaging, but if it gets mixed in with paper, the paper recycling companies are going to have a hard time of it… it needs to be better marked that the paper is not paper, so people dispose of it appropriately… right now it isn’t… people can’t tell the difference. i have not read an article about this from the recycling industry… it’s not a problem yet because there’s so little of it out there… but give it a few months…

Besides that, plastic is plastic — it requires petroleum to produce, and nowhere on their site is it said that this material is biodegradable (as paper is). It requires another production process (which in turn draws power) to “melt down and reuse”.
As someone pointed out in Ecogeek’s comments, “indestructible” means if it’s landfilled it’s not going away.
Also, given that most chemicals are not tested by any regulatory agency for toxicity (MSDSs are written by the manufacturers themselves) who says these synthetic substances are safe? I can’t find the ingredients list anywhere, so I can’t check.

October 20th, 2006 at 1:00 pmVery interesting. I am a children’s author/illustrator and my latest books are all about the environment and how children can help Mother Nature. I also think ebooks could be a great way forward.
October 21st, 2006 at 4:55 pmYeah, I think e-books are the best bet, except for tomes that you absolutely must own, because they have specific meaning for you. I think printed books will always have their place, but only great books will be made from trees eventually. The rest of the crap out there will take up only gigabytes….
On the other hand, I have some of my great-grandmother’s books, and i wouldn’t trade them for anything. I love that I own some classics that she read, maybe on her boat trips back and forth across the Atlantic…
October 22nd, 2006 at 7:48 pmIf you read the book, Cradle to Cradle, the authors describe what the book is made of…they are recommending an entirely new way of manufacturing that does not produce waste. Hence the title. Their idea is that we stop thinking of material things as having a finite life but rather an infinite one. Read the book! It is such food for thought.
