When I lived in Bonn, half an hour away from Cologne, bike theft didn't seem to be a huge issue unless you left your bike parked near the train station. Cheap city bikes were still the norm though.

Toronto's (now-defunct due to lack of funding) BikeShare also provided a model of this. It worked on a much smaller scale, with bright yellow bikes and particular businesses/organizations holding the keys for the bikes parked outside their locations. A year's membership was about $50 for unlimited use.

Though I have my own bike, I would have probably bought a BikeShare membership anyway this summer, if just for the one-way trips I make by bike.

There were doing that in Madison WI when we lived there in the 90s. They called it the Yellow Bike scheme. I'm sure other cities do the same thing.

That's a really interesting idea. I wonder if that would catch on in the states anytime soon.

I was born in Seoul and I remembered that there weren't that many cars around.. I moved to the states and went back to visit couple years later and the change dismayed me so much! There were so many cars that it literally took 2 hours to get 20 miles.. and there were so much smog in Seoul that you couldn't see the stars out at night. Very saddening to me.

I lived in Miami for two years and got by with a cruiser bike and absolutely loved it. It is truly great way to see a place and it's nice to have the wind whipping through your hair. :)
