Few things boil my blood like the disposable plastic water bottle. This thing stinks–literally! Go on, smell that oil-derived polyethylene.
There are many reasons to despise the disposable plastic water bottle. For one, it is straight up terrible for the environment, it’s over-priced and the water’s not even better than tap water–in many cases it simply is tap water. Ridiculous!
With all my water rage, I’ve come dangerously close to a postal outburst. Luckily, however, the fury hath been quelled. I’ve recently found a healthy and safe place to vent my environmental frustrations: yes, ABC’s Good Morning America Now.

Great piece on Good Morning America! However my husband and I were just at stores looking at sigg bottles and we smelled the inside…it smelled like chemicals, it was awful! You did not mention anything about stainless steel bottles which seem to be the best and do not have that coding in it like sigg that makes the inside funky. We have been doing a lot of research on this topic and it is great that you are educating people on how bad plastic water bottle are for the environment.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:53 amWait, I thought Siggs were stainless? Hmmm….I guess not, though I guess as long as you’re not putting hot water in them…I don’t cook with aluminum for that reason. Siggs are for water only (for me) then!

I agree though, that Good Morning America should have included stainless steel options such as Foogo and Klean Kanteen. We do not use Sigg’s because of the epoxy liner inside and the aluminum. thanks so much for leaving a comment. I’m not sure what you mean though . . . I don’t think Sigg bottles smell bad all. I just did a sniff test on mine and it smells totally neutral. Sigg bottles are made from Aluminum. They have a very thin, but totally safe protective layer on the inside. Take another wiff and let me know if you still notice this problem. I’ll try to look into it, but as far as I know most people find Sigg’s to be the best alternative to plastic disposable and reusable bottles.

April 17th, 2008 at 10:27 amI’m so bothered by this that I started a website just to sell “safe” reusable water bottles. Siggs are actually an aluminum that is lined with a water based epoxy. The liner is baked on at such a high temp. that it has tested 0% for leaching all the nasty things that we’re hearing about. I drink from a Sigg and a Klean Kanteen - my kids love their Guyot Stainless bottles, as well. If you want more information, please email me at julia@h2ox2.com. I’ve done a lot of research on this!
April 17th, 2008 at 5:35 pmMy frustration is with the lack of sports caps w/filters - I know the New Wave company has the corn-based water bottle with the filter and I love that they do … but at roughly $8 a bottle (and roughly 90 refills for the cap, you need to buy a whole new bottle to get a new cap w/filter), I’d love to see one of these companies like Kleen Kanteen or SIGG (or even Nalgene) come out with their own filtered cap. Yes, you can get a PUR or Brita filter for your tap at home - but what about when you’re at work or on-the-go and need to refill?
I did find bottles with caps and replaceable filters (you don’t need an entire new cap) at http://www.purewater2go.com - however, i really would like to use a Kleen Kanteen or a SIGG and there aren’t caps to fit their bottles.
Sigh.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:08 pmAgain, we went to whole foods last night and smelled the sigg bottles…again it has a very strong chemical smell. We took the bottle off the shelf, uncorked it and it was a very STRONG smell. Try it out the next time your in a store. We then tryed out a stainless steel bottle and there is no smell at all and no inside coding.
