The umbrella comes with a tiny instruction card (printed on recycled paper of course). It says something like, "to avoid damage, keep umbrella into the wind."

I think that's the trick. Most umbrellas can't withstand a harsh gust, but turn it into the wind and you'll have a much better chance.

Its great, a nice looking eco friendly umbrella - but can it withstand high winds? That's always my question about umbrellas, mine always end up turning inside out in the wind...

Oooooh!! this reminds me of the project by ecofashionista Jill Danyelle for the Treehugger design contest a couple years back. She made the MOST beautiful dress out of discarded umbrellas- very Ghesquiere- or was it Balenciaga- influenced as I remember. When I walk around in Manhattan you see so many umbrellas in the trash, it's such a waste and the fabric is usually fine- it's the flimsy frames that break. What a good invention, and cute too!

There is also now a cool umbrella by "brelli" that is supposed to be made of eco materials that will biodegrade over time :) ... it doesn't have polka dots but it is afforadble and very beautiful ! (You can see through the top and the rest is made of bamboo).
