MTV Trashes Rainforest for Road Rules/Real World Challenge

Way to go, MTV. You try to convince us you’re dedicated to being green, going so far as to make this year’s Real World abode as green as can be and enlisting our very own Summer Rayne Oakes to give the cast a tour of the eco-features.  Then, you go and trash a piece of rainforest for a brainless, scripted ‘reality show’.  Nice job.

The ‘Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Island’ has been much-hyped on the network of late, promoted as a sort of ‘Survivor’ where contestants must perform tasks and survive in a ‘remote island environment’.  But, Michael Drake of the Tree Climber’s Coalition has the inside scoop on what went down on the set of the show.  Aside from the fact that they found scripts and that the set is far from remote, they also revealed some shocking destruction to the area where the show was filmed.

Ecorazzi describes what the Tree Climbers Coalition found:

As one would expect, the real “reality” is much less exciting. In fact, as was recently reported by Michael Drake on the Tree Climber’s Coalition site, not only is the show basically scripted and shot in and around civilization, but it also appears to have done a good deal of environmental damage. Drake, along with others living on Boca del Drago Island in the Republic of Panama witnessed MTV clear a large section of rainforest for the set construction. In addition, they also trashed a pristine beach, disturbed a bird sanctuary island “off-limits” to human visitations, and left behind an insane amount of garbage, set debris, and refuse.

As Drake wrote, “MTV’s behavior in this situation has been rampantly inconsistent with their self-proclaimed ‘MTV Green Crusade’. I sense a bit of hypocrisy and I question their commitment toward being ‘green’.”

Check out all of the photos and the full account of what was left behind after the MTV crew vacated the site at the Tree Climbers Coalition website.  It’s pretty sick.  MTV, what excuse are you gonna throw at us to explain this away?

  1. Wow, just wow. I don’t watch MTV or know the show, but I am shocked. What they are doing is really sad and pathetic – all for a useless (and probably dumb) show.

  2. I am horrified. MTV represents nothing but excess and materialism and now obviously disregard for the earth.

  3. This makes me so damn mad every time I look at it! I really thought MTV was better than that, even if they make some silly programming, they make some decent stuff too AND they are supposed to be representative of the younger generation, who are def. passionate about the Earth! Grrrrrrr………

  4. I am not surprised by any of this. I live in Panama in the summer and have have family there. As a returned Peace Corps volunteer I know how hard it was to build a good rep. for Americans. This just makes the role of volunteers there in Bocas much harder!

  5. when you post articles like this, please help us out by giving us some info on how to best complain to MTV. An email address, phone number, etc. Preaching to the choir only goes so far! Thanks.

  6. Michael Drake says:

The article was actually written by Joe Maher. I just took the pictures.

  7. No surprise, MTV sold its soul long ago. Stopped showing videos, endless “reality” shows that promote greed, and selfish behavior. When they do show videos at 4 am Its the same materialistic
crap that turned people off to once great music like hip-hop, ditching artists who rapped about social justice in favor of no talent wannabees. It used to encourage youths to think about something other than themselves, now they encourage nothing but selfish behavior.

  8. Now that this stupid network has canceled TRL can it go a step further and cancel itself? MTV is a disgusting network that instills grotesque materialism.

I’m in the film business and I can assure you that a lot of people are required to get a program (TV) or film in the can. The crews are more concerned about getting the footage than about the trash they generate and this is a shame!
As for REALITY TV ~ the only thing reality about it is the money and ratings! That’s it. I’d suggest the Hollywood Reporter as a starting point for getting this example of blatant disregard for cleaning up the messes they create out to the tv/film crowd in LA! As for snubbing the public ~ you have to remember the TV REALITY producers think all civilians are idiots who would do anything to get their 15 minutes of fame!

  10. This is terrible. The Line Producer and the location manager must not have finished up their jobs! This is terrible. The government in Panama should fine MTV for leaving their garbage there…shame on MTV.

  11. Call for a boycott of MTV.

  12. NTV- “N” for narcissism.

  13. MTV, why don’t you just try showing some videos instead of the ridiculous, stupid reality shows that you air. MTV stands for music television right?

  14. u suck!

  15. stupid redneck hicks! mtv such’s pricks! these dumb real world shows need to stop! it’s all the same frat boy retards.

  16. It’s okay. I just bought some offsets and they can do their show now.

  19. Bocas Del Toro is the one of the most pristine places on this planet. It is incredibly beautiful, the folks down there are warm and friendly. A place everyone should go. So much to do in Bocas Del Toro. How sad that MTV would allow this to happen. Clean up your act MTV, and clean up the mess you left. And give back to Bocas what you took.

  22. As guests in Bocas, MTV should have left the community as or better than they found it.
The money MTV will earn on this latest garbage reality show would considerably help the conservation efforts, wildlife protection or healthcare & education for the indigenous people that live there.
Bocas is a beautiful area famous for its nature and wildlife, hopefully MTV picks up their game and contributes back to the community that they have left scarred, or at least play some music videos.

  24. MTV jumped the shark when they yanked the plug on the Headbanger’s Ball because they were terrified of the blow back from Ozzy bringing down the Berlin Wall, and the Metal Revolution that swepted through the Eastern Block after the fall of the Iron Curtain. MTV2 brought it back decades later, when it was safe to go back in the water, a pale version of its former self, devoid of the type of anti-nuclear and polical implications the original once had, despite the spandex and the big hair… MTV saw its hayday when it had the courage to air Aeon Flux, which they then turned into Charlize Theron’s worst flick… There’s nothing left of MTV except crappy top 40 Disney divas… The only place to see cool videos is MySpace and YouTube. Maybe Planet Green should have a music video show… ring back the feeling youth might actually be onto something new!

  25. Shame on MTV!

  28. I happened upon the show yesterday and witnessed the cast using products like shaving cream, shampoo, and other toxic products in the ponds and ocean. The least MTV couldve done in this regard is provide them with biodegradable products.
