What appears to be a small beginning will ultimately develop into a full blown systems.Future cities would have 40% of their surface area at the ground level dedicated to forests and lakes and gardens. 20% of the areas would be dedicated for multilayer transportation systems where as the balance 40% would have two hundred or more storied skyscrapers those would serve as residential , office and manufacturing as well as entertainment centers. Three dimensional agricultural activities would be the norm. For a glimpse into the world of future please see the website http://www.eloquentbooks.com/MegalopolisOne2080AD.html
For the present this approach to build gardens at the roof tops as well as on the walls would continue as individuals as well as corporates would try their best to neutralize global warming.

I talked about vertical gardens with my AP Environmental students last year -- I am happy to see this piece on it! LOVE those indoor planters.

There is an easy care, slow growing grass that lines the corporate rooftops in Japan.
It lives off natural rain fall, and not much else. In exchange, it provides layers of insulation, keeping the electric bill down. It may be something that we can all share.
