Ecouterre: The Power of Good Design in Eco Fashion

The great design mind behind the web’s most popular green design blog, Inhabitat, has now launched a gorgeous new site dedicated to eco fashion, called Ectouterre.

Jill Feherenbacher created Ecouterre because she thought the impact that of fashion industry has on the planet isn’t being taken as seriously as it should be. Jill says:

I don’t think that mainstream pop-culture is paying enough attention to this issue, and I don’t think the green movement really is either. I thought it was high time fashionistas and hardcore environmentalists start talking together and thinking about the power of good design.

Go check out the new site, complete with great NYC Fashion Week coverage to kick it off, and fantastic eco fashion reporting by the team there.

Starre Vartan is the founder and editor-in-chief of Eco-Chick and author of The Eco-Chick Guide to Life (St. Martin's Press). A problogger and oft-quoted green living expert who has been featured in the NYTimes, Elle, Glamour and Whole Living, she is a contributor to The Huffington Post, Inhabitat, and Hearst's The Daily Green, and is currently editor-at-large for Coco Eco Magazine. An active ecofashionista, she has style edited for Plenty magazine and coordinated runway shows. She splits her time between Connecticut and NYC and calls Sydney, Australia her second home, even though it was her first (as that's where she was born and most of her family resides). When not writing, blogging, or researching her next book, she is trailrunning, trying to cook, or snowboarding.

As a fashion designer, My hope was to find something inspiring under the design in the “design in eco fashion” section. I’ve made clothes out of ironed plastic bags. Do you know it there are any more inovative ideas out there?

A wonderful project. The future can only be the perfect green design and as less as possible. After some years of thinking and writing and working in the green fashion area I am sure that reducing our consumer wishes is the only way to save our world.

By the way, I opened my Etsy shop for green fashion.
You are welcome to visit! Recycling, silkdresses and handprinted, wool, organic denim and more.

totally agree re conversations need to start between the high fashion world and the environmental groups. We need eco chic fashion products, but ones that are fashionable and follow good design practice. Eco fashion is the future. We have designed and created our range of eco chic designer bags, Ben & Bear, from the inner tubes of tyres and vintage clothes and belts (used as the straps) and have come up with fabulous original designs to suit most styles and tastes. Using redundant materials is a way forward for fashion!
