Evergreen Makes a Difference

Evergreen State College in Olympia , WA has taken on the rarely addressed issue of college students with mental disorders. Their facility and program emphasizes another aspect of the importance of a clean and healthy environment. We are all greatly affected by our environment and when one is hyper sensitive to their surroundings, a clean and pleasant environment is keen.

0506_72314glean.jpgThe nontraditional college has approximately 4400 students. In addition to a well crafted educational program, the campus has its own organic farm which helps to eliminate not only toxins from the student body’s diet, but also ease the minds of those with compulsive disorders. The on site composting program promotes social interaction and allows the students to help make a difference in their community. Based upon the article in the NYT, it seems that this campus may be eligible for LEED certification since they have integrated a waste management program and provide space and monitor carpoolers and bicycle commuters.

Parents of the students say that they have seen positive results by sending their children to the college as compared to the other colleges. Thankfully, there is more of a tendency for existing schools and new schools to implement an environmentally friendly campus. LEED is making a new rating system specifically for schools

A Royal Statement Indeed

Prince Charles is elegantly using his power to make a powerful statement. The NYT reported that the Prince had made the choice to travel like his ordinary country men. No more excessive fuel devourers, aka private jets and helicopters. Instead he will be utilizes the energy conservation method of public transportation such as commercial flights, trains, and biodiesel cars.

The Prince emphasized that the carbon footprint that we make today directly impacts the future generations. Now the royal style sense will not be thrown away. In fact, the prince is taking his existing Jaguar and Land Rover converted so that they run on 100% biodiesel. He will be upgrading his current residential electrical system so that it is more energy efficient. Even his charitable corporation, Duchy Originals is getting a eco-revamp. The food company will soon be measuring the emission levels of its greenhouse gases.

Wouldn’t it be great if our country’s leader would take such initiatives and create a statement, a commitment to his country and the environment? That would definitely make the papers. His eco-friendly ranch would make for a great cover on Architectural Digest.

I just came across a really cool web store today called 2Modern. While not all of their products are eco-friendly, they do have a few designated earth friendly collections for the home and small office. Most of the products found on this site are exclusive and only available through 2Modern’s website. The collections are made from FSC Certified woods and environmentally certfied fabrics. Hopefully soon we will be able to see more sleek and modern eco-friendly collections from them. In the meantime, just browse through their website to find interesting products. Not all of the environmentally sound products are listed in the eco-friendly catergory, but rather by manufacturer.
