Spring 2010 Beauty Trends, Eco Chick Style

Forever two seasons ahead, runway models are already sporting Fall and Winter 2010 looks – and it’s not even spring yet. But in case you’re having a hard time remembering the upcoming season’s trends from last summer’s runways, we’re happy to give a little refresher course. Pastel eyes, pops of purple, peach lips, defined cheeks and beachy, voluminous waves are all totally wearable and perfectly suited for spring’s signature vibe of freshness and renewal.

Pastel Eyes

That’s right, the oh-so-80’s trend of pastel eye shadow is back with a vengeance, but keep it sheer to avoid looking like a fashion victim circa 1986. Jane Iredale’s Bling Eyeshadow Kit offers gold, blue, pink, purple and green in flattering shades that bring the look to 2010.

Pops of Purple

Whether on the eyes in watercolor washes of plum and lavender or on the lips in dramatic violet, purple makeup is in this season. Try it with NVEY Eco’s Matte Violet Rose Organic Lipstick, or Matte Periwinkle Lavender Organic Eye Shadow.

Peach Lips

Innocent but with a touch of sexy color, peach and apricot shades of lipstick can complement nearly any complexion. Josie Maran’s sheer coral beige is pretty and understated, while Korres Coral 45 makes the trend pop in a brighter, more vibrant shade.

Defined Cheeks

Moschino did it in sweet, succulent pink while Derek Lam took it in a decidedly more bronzed direction, but nearly all of the top designers gave their models some decidedly pronounced cheekbones this season. Keep it soft and youthful with Logona’s blush duo in Apricot, Peche or Mauve.

Beachy, Voluminous Waves

There’s just something about windswept, just-got-back-from-the-beach waves that feels inexplicably good, isn’t there? It’s so casual and carefree. Get this voluminous style with a sea salt spray like John Masters Sea Mist, which adds texture and volume. Check out a step-by-step tutorial at StyleList.

Bringing Natural Products to the Masses with SEED Body Care

“Natural products just don’t work as well.” Every time I hear this I wonder, when was the last time you experimented a little with different brands? Perhaps this blanket statement was a bit more accurate a decade ago, but natural body care products have made incredible strides lately and as far as I’m concerned, many of them work even better than conventional products.

But, that’s still the mindset among the mainstream public, who often pick up soap, shampoo and lotion at the grocery store based on advertising or what’s on sale. People are becoming more aware of the health hazards hiding in these products in the form of parabens, phthalates and toxic fragrances, but they’re still convinced that non-toxic alternatives are somehow subpar.

Enter SEED Body Care, a new brand that’s determined to prove that theory wrong. More »

Endangered Species Print Project: Adorably Hip Eco Art

They’re cute. They’re modern. They’re affordable. And, they save animals. What can’t these awesome art prints do? The Endangered Species Print Project is a range of limited edition art prints featuring animals like the Panamanian Golden Frog, the Seychelles Sheath-Tailed Bat and the Madagascar Fish Eagle, and 100% of the sales are donated to conservation organizations.

Artists Jenny Kendler and Molly Schafer (below), who bonded over a mutual love for animals at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, have been collaborating on projects that combine art and the environment since 2005. The super creative pair started the Endangered Species Print Project so they could use their talents to have a positive impact on the natural world.

ESPP-2

In an interesting twist that highlights just how dire the plight of each endangered animal featured in the series really is, the number of prints available for each animal corresponds to the number of animals left in the wild. For example, only 45 prints of the Amur Leopard will ever be created, because only 45 still exist outside of captivity.

Chic Scents from Tallulah Jane and A Perfume Organic

Have you ever found a fragrance that blended so well with your natural scent, it seemed like it was made for you? The kind of scent that compels you to furtively sniff your own wrists, and makes men find your neck completely irresistible?

For a long time I thought I would never find a perfume like that again. I was never a big fan of synthetic fragrances but gave them up completely in college, in favor of essential oils. But I’m not a master perfumer and I’ve never been able to create a blend that was just right.

Maybe now, I won’t have to – thanks to boutique perfumeries that offer up non-toxic, cruelty-free, vegan fragrances that easily rival the department store stuff. Organic online beauty boutique Spirit Beauty Lounge has two new perfume lines that sound totally sniff-worthy.

Eco Chick’s Heroines for the Planet: Josie Maran

01/18/10

She’s a top model, actress, hot mama, businesswoman and one of the world’s most recognizable women in green. So it’s only natural that Josie Maran would be the first in a fun new series of interviews Eco Chick will be doing with green movers and shakers, Eco Chick’s Heroines for Planet Earth!

josie-maran

The organic beauty entrepreneur has brought natural, eco-friendly cosmetics to the masses with Josie Maran Cosmetics, a brand that proves beyond a doubt that going green can be glamorous. Pure, gentle and non-toxic, Josie Maran Cosmetics are also sophisticated and always in tune with the season’s hottest trends.

I talked to Josie about weird trends, foundation faux pas and what’s next for JMC.

SR: What’s the ugliest makeup trend you ever tried and wore out the door?

JM: I’ve always kept it pretty subtle except for bright red of course. But i remember wearing bleeding blue eye shadow with too much black eyeliner, dirty brown skin, and sloppy hair to an event once…ooops!

SR: Do you see women on the street and want to tackle them and redo their makeup?

JM: There are many faux pas but the worst is when you can see that dark foundation line under the jaw line. Blend ladies! The whole point of foundation is to look like you are not wearing makeup.

SR: Do you spy any big trends in makeup for 2010?

JM: I spy lots of gold with pops of turquoise for the eyes and confident blush wearing women!!
