Volunteering, A Great Start to Activism
”
Lately I’ve been thinking of ways in which I can help on a more local scale and get involved in the community. Yesterday, I found this great website, “Volunteer Match” that pairs people with an organization based on your location, skill set and availability. This amazing site currently has 40,607 organizations listed and organized by categories such as: “Advocacy and Human Rights,” “Environment,” “Hunger,” “Politics,” and lots more.
Green Fertility Blog

Hello Kitty in traditional Korean garb accompanies “Harubang,” a Korean fertility god made of volcanic rock.
Hello Kitty and Harubang adorn the desk of author, Marie Myung-Ok Lee, who is a visiting lecturer at Brown University. Marie is an eco-inspired blogger who spices up the web with her green consciousness related to all things fertile.
Marie started Green Fertility as a site to post her experiences with attempting to conceive, along with information on various holistic practices, and green alternatives to mainstream consumerism. Using the handle, “Fertility Bitch,” Marie doesn’t hold back in her biting critique of everything from vaccinations and their connection to autism, to anti-depressants and their link to stillbirths. Marie is always interested in the latest on beauty must-haves, environmentally friendly products, as well as news relating to women and social issues/activism.
Eco Chick is happy to add Green Fertility to our blogroll. We need more outspoken, intelligent women speaking out! Keep it up Marie.

I have been thinking about what I do on a daily basis to minimize my environmental footprint. There is always more, but here are some examples of what I do:
1. Recycle everything – including plastic bags, bread bags, etc.
2. Support local farmers by participating in CSA’s and purchasing food at coops.
3. Save my own recycling and garbage and take it to the dump myself once a month-cutting the need for garbage pick-ups.
4. Keep lights off unless I need them.
5. Keep the heat low/off.
6. Seek clean power sources.
7. Carpool or bicycle.
8. Find apparel at second hand/consignment stores or seek out sweat-shop free/organics.
9. Participate in activism – donating – volunteering – educating (although I don’t do this as much as I’d like.)
10. When on a hike or just hanging out in the woods – pick up garbage/recyclables and carry them out.
11. Convert the office to recycling.
12. Use energy star appliances.
I know I’ve left stuff out… What do you do?
