Ekovaruhuset – Translates to "Totally Justifiable"
by Jennifer Cross · 04/27/06
If Eco Chick were a store, it would be Ekovaruhuset in Stockholm, Sweden.
Tucked into the old part of Stockholm, between junk-riddled flea markets and souvenir shops toting more viking paraphernalia than you can shake a sword at, Ekovaruhusset showcases the most fashionably feminine eco-clothes we have ever come across in one place.
When we found Ekovaruhuset, owner Johanna Hofring was busy holding a baby, directing extremely tall models for the following day’s fashion show, and greeting friends. In addition to her store in Stockholm, she is preparing to open a location in the Former Art Fiend Foundation building on Ludlow Street in New York come fall.
“I don’t know if it will work in New York.” She admitted cautiously.
An extremely fashion-forward boutique offering ecologic products that can’t be found anywhere else in the city? We think it will do just fine.
The clothes on sale at Ekovaruhuset are not for those watching their cash flow, but that’s why God invented credit. Baby-shirts with imprints of Elvis, Einstein and Jesus, for example are $23. However, as they are the American Apparel Sustainable Edition they are completely justifiable even if your kid will outgrow them in a month.
In addition to American Apparel Sustainable Edition, Ekovaruhuset carries a wide-range of noteworthy labels:
Blackspot sneakers with their hand-drawn anti-logo and vegetarian leather, Kuyichi Pure Denim eco-streetwear line, and Camilla Norrback’s more exclusive line of clothes that make you drool with desire. The good thing about everything at Ekovaruhuset is that (regardless of how it hurts your bank account), you won’t be hurting the environment – and thus well worth being a little late on the rent.

C’mon, you gotta know me by now…I just had to go searching for this one…
S-t-r-e-t-c-h marks: We either got ‘em, are going to get ‘em, or are OCD enough that we have to prevent them even if we’re not prone to them!
So I went surfing the big cyber waves and came up with Earth.Mama.Angel.Baby….(no relation to Gwen’s - Love.Angel.Music.Baby – (even though she can use this on her big frontal bump right now)…Very interesting copywrite:
“Massage this light, luscious oil onto your growing middle section, hips and breasts… It’s infused with certified organic chamomile and calendula to keep your skin moisturized, soft and pliant. You can also pour it into a warm bath and/or massage it into your perineum…” WOW, that is enough to turn any guy on I’d imagine…
* Guess what? It also has no nut oils? good, cause we never really liked nuts anyway! And they say it smells like heaven!!! Hmmm, how the hell do they know that?!?
Walmart Going Ga-Ga with Organics
Pretty soon we’ll see a major push from Walmart going organic. Public relations stint or not, this is BIG news given that they have power across borders.
“They have huge potential because it’s not just Walmart we’re talking about, it’s their entire supply chain,” states Jeff Erikson, U.S. director of SustainAbilty Consulting.
What does this mean? That Wal-Mart, as a corporation, can push more on cleaning up the manufacturing side of the table.
What organic products are they offering? Well, the new Dallas Supercenter opened with 400 organic products, ranging from food to baby clothes to home decor. They will be doubling their organic products in the next month and be looking for new items ranging from food to apparel to paper and electronics. This means mountains for supply chains…

I have been a bag-lady for a long time. Often disappointed with the offerings at most retailers, I tend to look for more original pieces than the ususal fare. On a women’s camping trip I attended five years ago I met Kerrigan Kessler, a talented designer who was carrying a gorgeous bohemian bag that I instantly coveted. Once she told me she produced these wearable creations, I began to frequent her website where you can mix and match numerous swatches and straps to design your own completely unique piece. The bags are handmade using vintage fabrics, including some organic cotton canvases. Kerrigan is also a kundalini teacher and her spiritual practice permeates her work. Her bags are colorful and inspired. KTKHandmade

Mapu, with its wide-ranging array of organic and biologic products, and focus on mother´s and women, is a must-stop spot for the environmentally minded eco-chick tourist while in Barcelona.
Mapu is tucked away in the maze-like Bari Gotic — the old quarter of Barcelona. If you weren’t looking for it, you most likely wouldn’t find it. It is run by the friendly Puri Gomez and her helpful hijo (son).
The storefront displays everything from eco baby toys to rice milk. The inside is cramped, but all of your organic needs can be met. Organic vegetables, biologic wines, Weleda cosmetics, earth-friendly cleaning products, and a wide assortment of flavored tofu choices line the tight shelves.
Looking for products that may be of interest specifically to women, Puri introduced me to the Moon Cup. It is a reusable menstrual cup that is made from soft silicone rubber. Apparently it is all the rage in Barcelona. Initially only enviro-friendly consumers were asking for it but now girls are coming in by the dozens seeking this alternative to tampons. Along the same lines, she showed me Sea Pearls. These Atlantic sea sponge tampon alternatives are safe, natural and reusable.
