Eco Chick Debates: Celebrities and Green – An Endorsement Made in Heaven?

Chloe Sevigny, above, endorses a limited edition cream by Keihls benefitting Oceana.
Celebs; love ‘em or hate ‘em, they impact how we feel about products and politics, and as much as we’d like to deny it, in recent tussles over Planned Parenthood and the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, plenty got involved, speaking out about their convictions. And some say it made all the difference.
I asked Kate Dillon, a top model who supports eco fashion designers (she has walked for the UN’s EcoChic runway showin Geneva, and The Greenshows, as well as done campaigns for Gucci, Chanel and Missoni), Michael d’Estries, the editor of the go-to site for green celeb gossip, ecorazzi.com, and Sydney Sadick writer and blogger at stylesolutions to share opinions on this question, which is the first in our new series, Eco Chick Debates.
“Does celeb endorsement make an eco product more viable? Does that product become “cool” in such case?”

Kate Dillon, Model
“Celeb endorsements help to bring attention to products, issues, people, etc making them “cool” in the short run, but they aren’t sustainable or even sufficient. In order for an eco product to be viable or cool in a lasting way, it has to actually be a high quality, and yes cool, product regardless of its eco or celebrity cred.” -Kate Dillon

Michael d’Estries editor of ecorazzi.com
“Celebrities have been hawking products for companies since the dawn of advertising, but their opinions are often just another layer of marketing – a recognizable face that draws you in. That’s not to say that some aren’t genuinely behind a particular green product, but in order that item to have a long shelf life, whatever its selling must shine beyond the sparkle of a Hollywood smile.” – Michael d’Estries

Sydney Sadick, blogger at Style Solutions
“Celebrity endorsement makes any product, eco or not, more viable. Once a celebrity name is associated with a product, a customer is more eager to buy it because he or she feels like they have a relatable factor with the celeb. Kim Kardashian is a perfect example of someone who is extremely successful in being popular from endorsements and making the product popular itself.” -Sydney Sadick
Eco Chick’s Heroines for the Planet: Josie Maran
She’s a top model, actress, hot mama, businesswoman and one of the world’s most recognizable women in green. So it’s only natural that Josie Maran would be the first in a fun new series of interviews Eco Chick will be doing with green movers and shakers, Eco Chick’s Heroines for Planet Earth!
The organic beauty entrepreneur has brought natural, eco-friendly cosmetics to the masses with Josie Maran Cosmetics, a brand that proves beyond a doubt that going green can be glamorous. Pure, gentle and non-toxic, Josie Maran Cosmetics are also sophisticated and always in tune with the season’s hottest trends.
I talked to Josie about weird trends, foundation faux pas and what’s next for JMC.
SR: What’s the ugliest makeup trend you ever tried and wore out the door?
JM: I’ve always kept it pretty subtle except for bright red of course. But i remember wearing bleeding blue eye shadow with too much black eyeliner, dirty brown skin, and sloppy hair to an event once…ooops!
SR: Do you see women on the street and want to tackle them and redo their makeup?
JM: There are many faux pas but the worst is when you can see that dark foundation line under the jaw line. Blend ladies! The whole point of foundation is to look like you are not wearing makeup.
SR: Do you spy any big trends in makeup for 2010?
JM: I spy lots of gold with pops of turquoise for the eyes and confident blush wearing women!!
Actress Kelly Rutherford Unveils Sylvania ‘Living Spaces’ Eco Lights
Actress and eco-advocate Kelly Rutherford, star of guilty pleasure TV hit ‘Gossip Girl’, helped debut the new Sylvania ‘Living Spaces’ line of compact fluorescent light bulbs last weekend and we were pleased to notice some exciting new features among the product line. Sylvania’s new collection is reputed to have a warmer, higher quality light than most other CFLs in what they’re calling “the next evolution of CFL technology”.
The new light bulbs are designed specifically for living spaces and are suitable for use in sconces, table lamps and decorative fixtures. The “micro-mini Twist CFLs” are the smallest on the market, eliminating the annoying problem of too-large bulbs.
“SYLVANIA has made it easy for consumers to make eco-friendly lighting decisions with its new Living Spaces collection – I’ve put them everywhere in my new house and we love the instant-on, cozy light,” said Rutherford. “When we lounge in the living room or entertain in the kitchen, we feel good about being energy-efficient without having to sacrifice light quality.”
And, here’s the thing that really caught our attention here at Eco Chick: a cool water powered LED shower light. It’s actually powered by running water! It doesn’t require any electricity or batteries, and it has an indicator that turns from blue to red as the water heats up. It fits right over a standard-size shower pipe. Very cool idea, especially for outdoor showers and those dark apartment and dorm shower stalls! It’s available at select Lowe’s locations or at Sylvania.com for $39.99.
Be EcoChic Event Kicks Off New York Fashion Week 2008!
I had the honor of attending the very fabulous Be EcoChic event last Thursday night, the start of the New York Fashion week MADness, and I had a blast. How could I not? The American Museum of Natural History, one of my top five fave places in NYC, lent a fantastic backdrop to the star-studded ecofashion show and party.
The event was HUGE! with hundreds filling up the space beneath the iconic blue whale that hangs over one of the main rooms in the AMNH- which I have to say was the PERFECT place to put a runway. There’s no ignoring that whale, and the connection between the aims of the folks behind the event, and the environment, were as bold and impossible to ignore as the cetacean above our heads.

Beards Are The New Hotness!

Letterman and Conan are wearing their ‘strike beards’ to show their solidarity with the writers on their shows.
I’ve been seeing it everywhere in New York City; guys with beards now that the cold weather is here. And I’m loving it! It’s sexy, and just a little bit fuzzy too. When I put together a meeting of green bloggers a few weeks back, ALL of the guys had beards, and none of them are hippies, though they are all creative, dynamic men.
Why am I talking about beard trends on an eco-blog? Because not shaving every day is definitely low-impact:
-Less hot water used in the shower or at the sink
-Less or no need for razors or shaving cream (which often comes in those huge unrecyclable containers)
-Hair on your face keeps you just a bit warmer outside- and in. Turning the thermostat down just 1 degree can save you 5% on your heating bill!

Boys with Beards! My friends (L-to-R) Dan Shapely and Brian Howard, editors at The Daily Green, and Muhammed Saleem, top green Digger, and
Me with my friend Ari, who hasn’t worn a beard in years, and is now a convert!

Leo was spotted with a beard recently while being honored at the Marrakesh Film Festival!

But ladies, please DON’T try this at home…. even if you’re as cute as Avril Lavigne!
