Ekovaruhuset – Translates to "Totally Justifiable"

Comments 3 Comments

by Jennifer Cross · 04/27/06

If Eco Chick were a store, it would be Ekovaruhuset in Stockholm, Sweden.
Tucked into the old part of Stockholm, between junk-riddled flea markets and souvenir shops toting more viking paraphernalia than you can shake a sword at, Ekovaruhusset showcases the most fashionably feminine eco-clothes we have ever come across in one place.

When we found Ekovaruhuset, owner Johanna Hofring was busy holding a baby, directing extremely tall models for the following day’s fashion show, and greeting friends. In addition to her store in Stockholm, she is preparing to open a location in the Former Art Fiend Foundation building on Ludlow Street in New York come fall.

“I don’t know if it will work in New York.” She admitted cautiously.

An extremely fashion-forward boutique offering ecologic products that can’t be found anywhere else in the city? We think it will do just fine.

The clothes on sale at Ekovaruhuset are not for those watching their cash flow, but that’s why God invented credit. Baby-shirts with imprints of Elvis, Einstein and Jesus, for example are $23. However, as they are the American Apparel Sustainable Edition they are completely justifiable even if your kid will outgrow them in a month.

In addition to American Apparel Sustainable Edition, Ekovaruhuset carries a wide-range of noteworthy labels:

Blackspot sneakers with their hand-drawn anti-logo and vegetarian leather, Kuyichi Pure Denim eco-streetwear line, and Camilla Norrback’s more exclusive line of clothes that make you drool with desire. The good thing about everything at Ekovaruhuset is that (regardless of how it hurts your bank account), you won’t be hurting the environment – and thus well worth being a little late on the rent.

Walmart Going Ga-Ga with Organics

by Summer Rayne Oakes · 03/24/06

Pretty soon we’ll see a major push from Walmart going organic. Public relations stint or not, this is BIG news given that they have power across borders.

“They have huge potential because it’s not just Walmart we’re talking about, it’s their entire supply chain,” states Jeff Erikson, U.S. director of SustainAbilty Consulting.

What does this mean? That Wal-Mart, as a corporation, can push more on cleaning up the manufacturing side of the table.

What organic products are they offering? Well, the new Dallas Supercenter opened with 400 organic products, ranging from food to baby clothes to home decor. They will be doubling their organic products in the next month and be looking for new items ranging from food to apparel to paper and electronics. This means mountains for supply chains…

As Green As Green Can Be?

There has been debate here lately about whether we, as “Greenies” should buy anything at all. This is a long-standing issue in the environmental community: Should we shun all consumer products and grow our own food, make our own clothes and educate our own kids (the time that takes tends to limit your ability to do much else, I’ve found)?

Or should we engage in society as “regular” folks and try to change the system by supporting environmentally-friendly companies, products and services? I would guess that most Greenies do both, to varying degrees (since I live in the Northeast, I can only garden for part of the year anyway, for example).

I’ve always had trouble with the ‘back to the land’ approach as I see many (certainly not all!) communities that are set up that way as having traditional gender roles. I have little interest in cooking and even less in having babies, sewing my own clothes or spending all day canning food.  I love the fact that I get paid for using my brain all day, writing, thinking, researching, asking questions, and interacting with all the other nerds that like that kind of work. At the same time, I realize my existence is predicated on people much poorer than myself doing all that hard (boring!) labor I don’t want to do. OR that some fossil-fueled machine has to do the work. So I try to buy Fair Trade and organic, and I clean my house myself, and I go to farmer’s markets and I grow my own summer veggies and I compost and I adopt rescued animals, and I try not to drive too much, and I recycle and reuse like crazy.  How are we supposed to come up with solutions if we are laboring all day? I need time to think, dammit!

What about you? What do you do? What tradeoffs do you make, and why?

Greenloop

Apparently there was all sorts of green swag at the Oscars, according to the Greenloop blog’s coverage. There were solar iPod chargers, Fat Tire Ale and Frog’s Leap Organic Wine, Arbor Snowboards, clothes by Edun and Loomstate, Eco Bella treats and more in the oh-so-enviable goody bags– which only went to celebs who arrived in Lexus and Toyota hybrids of course.

I then went over to the Greenloop store site and found all sorts of great green fashion, from many of the designers I have been reading about but didn’t know where to find. Such cute stuff!

Free Trade? Give it to me Fair, Straight Up

I must admit, after having come back from Hong Kong in the midst of World Trade talks and Fair Trade forays, I need to do a few posts dedicated to fair trade fashion. I came across equop, a fair trade cotton and indie artist fashion label while in Paris this past October. Agrocel, Skal and Eko….No, that’s not the first names of the tattooed-punks down the street that you secretively find attractive (could it be the nose rings, tight black jeans, and bad-ass attitude?), but the rigorous certification that they go through, ensuring that their clothes are

  • Fair Trade
  • Inspected by a third-party organization, and
  • Organic

You’ll find other weird names like: Dangli, Droog79, and Mallalieu Nonot quite certification this time, but the names of the artists that have contributed designs to the tee-shirts…Who knows, maybe they have a nose ring. GOD I love personal expression.

Side Note: (I own Mallalieu, want Dangli’s Bird Shit shirt). Want to know how to get special savings for this line? Hit me up on my newsletter.
