Aquaknots! Feral Childe’s Spring/Summer 2012 Collection is Aswim with Exotic Coral and Aquatic Horses

Shoal Shift in Flowerstripe Print, Silk Crepe
Feral Childe continues to be one of my favorite eco fashion lines (and fashion lines in general!), so I am especially excited to share part of their Spring/Summer 2012 collection with you all on Eco Chick.
Not only are their colors and patterns always interesting and always different, but they are immensely wearable and very well-made. I have been wearing the two blouses and two dresses I have from FC for years now – literally! Take a look at their site to see all the pieces from S/S 2012 and also a close-up at their hand-drawn and always-unique patterns.
Besides being designed and sewn in NYC, Feral Childe’s designers use eco friendly textiles, which include supersoft organic cottons, silks, Cupro, Italian metallic cotton and hempcel.

Suzanne Rae has been creating some pretty glorious eco fashions for a few seasons now, and we can’t seem to stop writing about her:

Her latest collection, shown yesterday at the Box in Lincoln Center as part of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, was “..inspired by the eternal revolution channeling the spirits of Jim Morrison, Aldous Huxley, and William Blake,” according to the show notes. So our greatest rock ‘n roll poet, a mind-as-world author and poet, and mystical Romantic poet? Beauty described via detail and repeated elements would not be an improper way to describe Suzanne Rae’s collection.

While some of the pieces shown were everywoman wearable, others, like the dress above, were what I like to think of as ‘dress up clothes’ because they remind me of those that are fun to dream about (and show us the designer’s imagination and themes) but aren’t something that seems terribly practical. Then again, maybe what we wear needn’t always be practical! Bring back the peplum and the cape!

Study NY’s F/W collections (see last year’s here) always make me look forward to the colder seasons (even if we are still in the midst of one!). Sewn from sustainable fabrics that are uncompromising in their green roots, and made NYC, this year’s showing at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Greenshows at Lincoln Center was – as usual – totally covetable (and even more so by the fact that her designs are so classic they can be worn for years to come).

For St. James, it’s all about the understated details that make you want to keep wearing something over and over again; take the skirt above, a closer look reveals a brush of color at the hem (see detail shots below). Wearability is important to the designer, which is why she always makes her pieces look not only comfortable, but in some cases, convertible too.

“Everything can be personalized and is meant to be worn your own way. I think that’s an important part of sustainability. Fast fashion is so recognizable on the street, and you don’t want to be wearing what everyone else is. Even if you’re wearing the same piece it can look very different,” St. James told Ecosalon.

Gretchen Jones never fails to impress – her design aesthetic moves beyond her clothes and into her always thought-provoking presentations.

Obsidian Gown.
This season’s theme was deserts, geodes and crystals. With pieces named after minerals, and the floor designed with a hand-lain sand mandala, the impression was one of old earth, crystal lattice structures out of a geology textbook, and the infinite color and myriad glimmer imparted by the earth’s bedrock.

H&M is making good on its promise to continue expanding their commitment to using sustainable fabrics. Their upcoming Spring, 2011 collection, Conscious Collection is the follow-up for Spring 2010′s Garden Collection. Utilizing organic cotton, Tencel, and recycled polyester, the all-white collection means that it will work with everything from denim to silks.
“It’s no longer just about organic cotton. The possibilities for creating a complete fashion statement with eco smarter materials are huge now. By designing recurring Conscious Collections we have the opportunity to show in a variety of ways what’s possible using more sustainable fabrics,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M head of design. “Shades of white are the season’s biggest fashion trend. White creates a romantic feeling with lace and broderie anglaise, but it is also the basic color in a sporty, relaxed style and in a preppy tailored look for men.”
