Win Two Tickets to See The Flaming Lips from the American Express Zync Card
I’m loving my new American Express Zync card, not only cause it looks supersleek, but because it’s a charge card, NOT a credit card, which means that I HAVE to pay the bill every month (which is a good way to keep out of debt! Or at least not get any deeper, right?). I’m also a fan because I get to choose my own bennies, like discounts on green merchants (see below) and exclusive access to music events. And all cards come with American Express’ protections like replacement of lost or stolen items that are bought with the card, and automatic travel insurance.
The deal with the Zync card is that you get to put together your very own personalized card, choosing from the packs available and adding those you want (I chose the Eco pack, the Style pack and the Go pack for travel) and ignoring the ones you don’t (there’s also a Restaurant pack, a Connect pack, and more). Some of the packs are free (like the Eco one, and the Give Back that helps you hook up your favorite charities), and some of them have a fee attached, with the idea being that if you use the benefits, you will more than earn what you pay in rewards back.
This year marks SPIN’s 25th anniversary, and to celebrate, the magazine has teamed up with ZYNC from American Express to put on a series of five concerts over five nights in New York City, July 26-30. The shows will feature some of rock’s most exciting performers, including the Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins, the National, Spiritualized, and the Black Keys. Additional tickets are on sale now by visiting Facebook.com/ZYNC and are going quickly!
To win 2 tickets to see The Flaming Lips at Terminal 5 in NYC on July 27th, leave a comment below telling us which AmEx Zync pack you would choose if you got the card and why. When you fill in the comment field, it will ask for you email address. This is the address I will use to contact the winner, so use a real email. Tickets will be provided courtesy of ZYNC from American Express.
Deets and Promises: Eco Chick does not sell, lease or lend any email addresses we collect. Contest ends midnight EST, Wednesday, July 21st, 2010. Good luck!
Disclaimer: I’m consulting with American Express on this card, but I only agreed to do so because I believe in its benefits and promises, and because it’s a charge card and not a credit card.
Behind the Scenes of the Project Green Search Model Competition Finals
Project Green Search, the first-ever green model competition, has a winner! Rachel Avalon hails from Los Angeles, California, and beat out over 130 other serious contenders for her new title as Green It Girl (read more about Rachel and her plans here). But before the winner was chosen, there were activities, photo shoots and some very good times.

The Ten Gorgeous (and Green to the Core!) Finalists Photo by Courtney Dailey.
Judging Project Green Search was lots of fun; I got a chance to go to most of the activities with the finalists and got to know them; what an impressive group of young women! From an Indy racecar driver to a natural nutritional counselor, to a college activist and an environmental educator, this was a talented and driven group of contenders. And as you can see, all of them were gorgeous too! The judging crew and I (see below) had our work cut out for us.

The judges! From left to right: Michael Zaliski, CEO of Omniquest Media, Anna Griffin, editor-in-chief of Coco Eco Magazine, Starre Vartan, author and publisher of Eco-Chick.com (I’m wearing an organic cotton dress by Doie), Remy Chevalier, Co-founder of Project Green Search, Deborah Lindquist, ecofashion designer, Josie Maran, former model and force behind Josie Maran Cosmetics, and Darren Moore, host of AlterEco and founder of Ecovations.
Day One: I got a chance to meet all the girls at a breakfast at our hotel, The Standard on Sunset Boulevard. Everyone was so excited to be there, and Taryn from EcoDivasTV started filming right away, and off we went!

Are you an aspiring designer? Just love creating fun t-shirts for your friends and family? If so, then check out Hessnatur and Planet Green’s Eco-Tee Design Challenge which has just gone live on PlanetGreen’s site.
The public will vote for the design they feel is most creative and original. After the pool is whittled down to five finalists, the esteemed panel of judges will choose a winner. The winner’s tee will be made at Dr. Muhammad Yunus’ Grameen Knitwear project, with 50% of the proceeds going back to the foundation. In addition, the winner’s tee will be sold internationally at Hessnatur’s website
Judges include Hessnatur designer Miguel Adrover, Toms shoes CEO, Blake Mycoskie and Eco-model Summer Rayne Oakes, as well as Miranda Purves, lifestyle editor at ELLE.
The official date to enter designs is from August 1st to September 1st, but all necessary tools are available to get started, so check out all the details here and get designing!

If Trees Could Talk Caption Contest
What’s the funniest caption you can think of for this cartoon? Leave your suggestions in the comments section below.
I will pick the winner, who will receive a really cool Starter Kit for Change, which contains all sorts of goodies that will motivate and educate, including fair-trade hot chocolate, a really cool tote, a tree seedling, a compact fluorescent lightbulb, and more. The kit would make a great present for anyone who has added being more environmentally aware to their New Year’s resolutions!
Champagne Cork Contest at DWR!
Do you have designing hands? Get some creativity in your holiday (this would be fun to make into a competition among family or friends too!) by creating a chair for Design Within Reach’s annual Champagne Chair Contest! No, not full-size ones….miniatures made from what would normally be thrown away from your celebratory Champagne during Christmas and New Year’s:
Create an original miniature chair using only the foil, label, cage and cork from no more than two Champagne bottles. Chairs will be judged by a panel of industry experts and the winners will embark on a nation-wide tour. The winning designers will receive DWR Gift Cards.
In an effort to minimize the mountains of packaging waste generated in the past, submissions should be made digitally. All entries must be received, via email, by 5pm (PT) on Monday, January 7, 2008.
What a fun idea…and if you don’t win, you can give your chairs to any dollhouse-having kid for extra seating.
