Who says an environmental magazine can’t look good? Like the cliche that eco-fashion is all about hemp sackdresses or vegan food is nothing more than tasteless tofu, it is time for the magazines representing Mother Earth to spiff it up. Ecocolo is a fabulous new Japanese eco magazine (there’s only been four issues so far) with a modern, fun and beautifully designed sensibility.

No, I can’t read Japanese, but there are lots of subtitles in english, and there are features on yoga, profiles of environmental activists (focusing on Japanese, but showing others as well), amazing layouts featuring recycled clothing and green fashion, sustainable architecture and design (like how different folks have made their work spaces green), fun products, and vegetarian/organic food.

You can get a little of the aesthetic on their website, but try to get a copy at your local international newsstand if you can. Ecocolo is worth seeing in print.

State of the Union Address States Something Incredible

Although our President has tried to hold back the tide of change toward cleaner healthier energy, some things he said in his last State of the Union Address suggests that he may be changing his tune, at least for now.  The oil money man said that “America is addicted to oil”, and implied that this is a bad thing.

Bush acknowledged that energy sources from solar, wind, and hydrogen not only exist, but that further support into research and development for “alternative energies” will be funded by the federal government!  In his speech he declared that we have to push forward in two vital areas: how we power our homes and offices and how we power our vehicles.  Following his speech, Bush even went so far as to visit a plant that produces solar panels in Michigan and make public statements about the importance of the technology.

Regarding vehicles, ethanol was mentioned specifically in the State of the Union Address.   Ethanol is a fuel that can be produced from various plants and plant matter.  It can be manufactured in our own backyard or rather our own rural communities, and in fact, it already is.  There is a fuel available, called E85; a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, and it is used to power cars and trucks.

Anna Sova Yummy

I attended the Anna Sova launch last party last weekend in Manhattan. The self-titled line of ‘luxury organics’, which includes aromatherapy sprays, soy candles, sheets, duvets and bedruffles (I call it bedwear), towels and paint is truly gorgeous, and I was thrilled to see that someone finally realizes that just because you’re eco-conscious does not mean you want to live in earth tones. There were deep oriental reds, and bright mustard, green apple and fuschia silk linens, as well as variously colored and textured linens.

Anna Sova herself (the Amazonian blonde on the left) was dressed up for the evening. She said she much prefers to be in jeans and cowboy boots (yup, she’s Texan!) and told me all about how she got to the point where she was able to launch her own luxury organics line- and why.

“The paint was my passion,” said Anna, “My paint smells like food because it IS food!” The paint, which comes in a range of colors, can also be mixed to your specifications and is made of milk casein and food grade emulsifiers and preservatives. Truly, it smelled like cake batter, and you can even scent it with aromatherapy oils (though they’ll only last about 6 months). “If you had a store you could paint your dressing rooms with it, and it would smell great as people change,” suggested Anna.

Ms. Sova has been in business since she was 16, and has designed over 4000 products, so she’s the kind of person who’s perfect to bridge the gap between mainstream and eco. I’ll buy it.
