Anthropologie Does a Little Green
Anthropologie is one of my favorites stores, but one I haven’t been shopping at as much lately, now that so many green fashion designers have such gorgeous stuff out there. Gone are the days when ecofashion meant organic cotton yoga pants with a stripe down the side. (While I love yoga pants, I don’t believe in wearing workout clothes unless you’re actually working out. But that’s just me!)
But now, Anthropologie is actually selling some stuff I wouldn’t feel too guilty buying. While I would rather spend my money at online or brick-and-mortar boutiques, and support the women who run them, sometimes you want to try stuff on, especially skinny Loomstate jeans, which I finally got a pair of (above).
I also found this cute Talla bag (above) at Anthropologie, on sale! Talla is run by Talla Wesley, who designs her prints, then has Samiti and Tharangini Designs print them for her. Samiti employs and trains underprivliged Indian women to hand-print patterns using traditional techniques. They also use vegetable and other eco-friendly dyes to print with.
Congrats to mainstream stores like Anthropologie for carrying eco-friendly stuff, so that people will start thinking of it as an easy choice to make.

Walking by a mainstream candle store on my way to the health food shop made my head pound almost instantly yesterday. The vulgar synthetic pumpkin smell being pumped out of this place was nothing remotely similar to any natural smell I have ever known. I am always amazed how many people burn these candles indiscriminately in their homes, sometimes all day long, filling the air with a stench that is supposed to evoke the aroma of a sugar cookie, an autumn breeze, or the smell of Christmas – Ugh! These odoriferous bombs make my nose itch. Go natural. Don’t expose your family and loved ones to synthetic, artificially derived fragrances that can cause allergies, asthma, and headaches. There are plenty of natural essential oils that can produce a pleasant scent experience.

As far as natural goes, lavender has always been one of my favorite herbs. At the health food store, I picked up a lavender candle made by Way Out Wax and it filled my house with the soothing smell. I try to support Vermont industries, having lived there in the past, and Way Out Wax makes it easy. This candle company makes some of the best smelling handmade candles around using soy and beeswax while avoiding dyes or artificial fragrances. Lavender has long been used as a stress aide, headache reliever, to deter insects, for skin problems and to alleviate insomnia and depression. As with all herbs, if you plan to use the essential oil directly, research the herb and its properties and cross-reference existing conditions and contradictory indications regarding therapeutic use.

We love Organicclothing.blogs because it gets down to the nitty-gritty of whatever topic they’re exploring. The reporting and writing is first-rate and you can read about subjects you probably won’t find covered elsewhere. If you want to know the latest about Jordanian sweatshops or exhaustive details about organic clothing certifications (two of their recent posts), this is the blog to go to.
Shellie and Michael Lackman, (the brains behind the blog) run Lotus Organics, an online organic clothing store. This is their business, and that’s why really know their stuff about organic clothes:
At LotusOrganics.com, all garments are made with certified organic cotton or hemp fabrics and use low-impact, fiber-reactive dyes. We try very hard to insure that our clothing is grown and manufactured under ecologically sustainable conditions.

There seems to be a new angle to the term “British Invasion”. While although the UK is still giving us amazing music such as Coldplay and Aqualung (Who just so happens to be playing at the Bowery Ballroom on May 1st), The Brits are just cranking out amazing green product lines and on-line eco-stores. The latest…. Well, let me introduce you to By Nature. While they have been around for a little while, these eco-lifestyle guru’s concerns about the startling statistics for the UK’s landfills have been manifested into what appears to be a unique and modern eco-friendly home accessories collection.
The most interesting is a photo album made of 80% elephant dung and 20% recycled paper. Now you may have a startled look on your face but actually elephant dung has been used by several environmentalists. Take for instance The Rosamond Gifford Zoo located in Syracuse, New York. They will be the first in the nation to be powered by its own animal waste.

If you still can’t get pass the elephant dung, how about these really awesome decorative pillows made from recycled seat belts or modern lamp shade called the “Spiro” lampshade made from 100% recycled cardboard. This company even has 100% recycled wine glasses. You could throw your own little swank green party at home with your new Vino Wine glasses and sustainable Sushi board while wearing an “Eco Woman” Tee made with organic cotton and azo-free dyes.

That’s what it is about girls, right? Jeans that make our asses look good while being good to the planet…It’s also nice to see that responsbile denim companies using organic cotton, less toxic to non-toxic dyes, and fair trade standards are popping up all around the globe. In my many travels around town, I’ve heard of a number of other potential start-up lines and brands that are tossing around the organic cotton idea…a Central America company, big retailer…hmmm, will keep you posted on who does it and when.
