Handmade Hair Accessories Trend: Matching Themed Pins

I have had long hair since I was a little girl; and on those days when it looks pretty flowing down my back, I am joyous. But those days are few and far between, and the rest of the time, I wear my hair in a bun or updo on top of my head. Whatever way I wear my hair, I love to keep pretty little hair clips or pins in there somewhere; there’s a lot of it and I need to control it a bit even when it’s down. Recently, I lost my last few fave accessories (they always disappear eventually, a fact you just have to accept) and so I thought Etsy might be a good place to find some uncheesy new ones. And I found several matching themed bobby pins, which I thought were really sweet.

(Above) iluxo has a number of handmade-from-veggie-tanned-leather hair pieces, like the matching octopus and bubbles (and there are a bird and feather, and a skull and flower, both of which I also love).

This sweet set is from prettyplsmpls, and is made from vintage materials.

I'm Blogging for Elle's Green Issue!

Go check it out! I’m the guest-blogger for Elle Magazine’s annual Green issue (on newsstands the month of April)! I’ll be reposting some of my pieces here, but for more- plus all the behind the scenes reports from their other bloggers, go to the Elle Tell All blog.

Shannon Kline is the creator of Sweet Pepita Clothing. Using recycled fabrics from old, funky tee’s and 100% organic cotton, Sweet Pepita blends sustainability with hip, retro style. You can send Shannon a favorite old tee-shirt that you don’t want to get rid of and she will give it new life as a baby-tee. I have requested she make duds for us adult folk also but for now its just for the wee ones.

I love to sew custom baby tees. Customers send me their old favorite adult sized t-shirts and I transform them into clothing for their babies. I just read that Americans throw away an unspeakable amount of clothing every year. And I know that we all have t-shirts we’re holding on to that we’re never going to wear again. Sewing them into baby tees feels really good! We’re recycling and giving a child a piece of her parent’s history.
