OK, so I totally forgot and just bought used books despite the fact that I was trying to partake in Buy Nothing Day. If you’re also doing a little shopping this weekend (trying to get a head-start on holiday gifts, of course!), then check out one of these eco-friendly boutiques:

Kaight is having a store-wide sale at the boutique in the East Village, or if you prefer shopping from home, enter “Thanksgiving” in the coupon code box at the checkout to get 15% off everything through Sunday.

Modify (a new online ecofashion store) is offering 25% off everything except vintage and pre-sale stuff… this new online store carries some of my fave brands including Toggery, Moral Fervor and Loyale. Sale through Monday.

We LOVE Etsy (the online source for recycled and handmade clothes, accessories, home decor and more that you buy directly from the creators) and they are having a 20% off sale this Sunday, November 25, as well as next Sunday, December 2. Check out the Etsy Trashion page for details on which creators/artists are participating.

Etsy's handmade goodies

A few weeks ago, while strolling through a farmer’s market in Amsterdam, I came upon a stall selling these purses …

I chatted with the seller for a bit and he explained the process his partner went through making these. The idea was simple, really … recycled munitions pouches from the army surplus store were made to look pretty with ’60s and ’70s era material leftover from Scandinavian home goods stores.

I bought one, he handed me his card, and lo and behold – my unique Amsterdam find is also available online at Etsy. At first, I was sad to know that I’m probably not the only one carrying a Katrina Kaye handbag. But then I checked out the Etsy shop and discovered it’s filled with handmade goodies!

Basically, Etsy’s a creative community. Artists from 84 different countries use this platform to sell all sorts of clothing and housewares and just about anything else that can be hand made, including baby clothes, bathing goodies, journals, furniture, and Ts.

In addition to all the unique creations on sale, they’ve also got a group of sellers who call themselves Etsy for Animals and donate part of their profits to various animal rescue charities. It’s all so inspiring. I think I’ve found my ideal place for serious internet shopping.

All I have to say is, check out Etsy. Basically, it is a website for all kinds of crafters, from high-end fashionista types to home-ec learned sewers to sell their wares. Not everything listed on the site is eco-friendly but much of it is (the pictures I chose are of recycled or reused clothing only), but all of it is hand-made, and comes directly from the crafters/creators, so you know it’s fair trade! Just browsing the variety of truly creative and fun ideas inspires me immensely.
