Ecocolo
Who says an environmental magazine can’t look good? Like the cliche that eco-fashion is all about hemp sackdresses or vegan food is nothing more than tasteless tofu, it is time for the magazines representing Mother Earth to spiff it up. Ecocolo is a fabulous new Japanese eco magazine (there’s only been four issues so far) with a modern, fun and beautifully designed sensibility.
No, I can’t read Japanese, but there are lots of subtitles in english, and there are features on yoga, profiles of environmental activists (focusing on Japanese, but showing others as well), amazing layouts featuring recycled clothing and green fashion, sustainable architecture and design (like how different folks have made their work spaces green), fun products, and vegetarian/organic food.
You can get a little of the aesthetic on their website, but try to get a copy at your local international newsstand if you can. Ecocolo is worth seeing in print.

Here’s calling all aspiring writers! I’m opening up a new Fiction section on Eco Chick, and I’m looking for entries.
The piece could be anywhere from 1500-7,000 words. The only guiding principles would be that it should have something to do with women and the environment, but that could be loosely interpreted. I’d love to post a new piece every season. I used to love the fiction sections in women’s magazines, which I’ve noticed have been slowly disappearing. I’d like to have an Eco Chick version of those sections and Summer is the perfect season to start!
Since fiction writers are usually rarely or barely paid (so sad) I am offering a little something for your trouble and creativity. I can only afford 30 bucks for the winning entry, but it’s something! And I will be happy to post your picture and bio along with your prose.
The piece would be introduced on the main page, and featured in its entirety on a page linked from the main one.
Email all entries to starre (at) eco-chick (dot) com by June 20, so I can have the winner up by the summer solstice. Please do not include attachments (other than the story itself) or images at this time. If you have any questions, post them in the comments section and then I won’t have to answer the same thing repeatedly.
Good Luck!
Sublime
Sublime, a UK-based magazine that is coming out as the ”first international ethical lifestyle magazine” is planning a think-tank session in New York on April 9th at Whole Foods Market. We’re not truly sure who still subscribes to magazines any longer, but they seem to have a pretty hefty staff which means some good, creative reporting.
