Eco-Beauty Consultant Jessa Blade's Recommendations for Dry Winter Skin

During Eco-Chick’s 3rd birthday party last month, I had the chance to meet eco-beauty consultant and make-up artist, Jessa Blades.
Jessa is the founder of Blades Natural Beauty and is a vessel of information regarding all things organic beauty and skincare. Shortly after learning about the breast cancer and body lotion connection, I had noticed I was almost out of face moisturizer. I had been sampling various brands over the last few months, and since old man winter has stepped up his game, I realized I needed to try a different moisture rich face cream. I contacted Jessa to ask for her expert opinion on the best eco & body friendly facial moisturizers out there for the winter season. Here recommendations are a perfect follow up to my body lotion post last week.
Mod.Skin Créme Nutri-functional #1 $48.00
This rich and lightly scented cream can either be used during the day or night use. It leaves a moisturized glisten to the skin without feeling heavy. It can be used for all skin types.(Can purchase on-line, specialty beauty stores/section or pick it up at Whole Foods)
Dr. Hauschka Toned Day Cream $39.95
This is Jessa’s favorite. It is a tinted moisturizer that contains therapeutic oils which reduce the appearance of irritation and irregular skin tones for a variety of complexions. It is ideal for normal skin types, but can also be used over-top of a moisturizer in the winter for extra dry skin. Plus, it has a great scent. (Can purchase on-line, specialty beauty stores/section or pick it up at Whole Foods)
These facial moisturizers come in 5 different varieties according to skin type. The products are available at a wide variety of stores and being that the company was founded in 1967, their heritage is respected within the industry. (Can purchase on-line, at major retailers or pick it up at Whole Foods)
Lip & Skin Balm by makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift $30
Another one of Jessa’s favorite is this dual balm. You can use it on your lips, face or apply it around the eyes at night time. The balm hydrates and protects the skin with food grade, biologically active ingredients and comes in either-Simply Vanilla or Simply Cacao.

Let’s just say my skin’s been in better shape. Partying (or is it networking?) too many nights, crashing on couches and in random (hey, not THAT random) beds and being a full-time student, blogger and freelance writer (not to mention getting pancaked for TV appearances) means I’m dealing with more blemishes than I ever did as a reclusive woods-tramping teen. PLUS I turned 30 this year and the wrinkles are arriving on schedule despite my family’s excellent genes in that department.
Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE a good facemask, which besides detox teas and lots of leafy greens seem to be my only saving grace. There’s something transforming about them, the way they tingle and harden on the face, their delicious aromatherapy while you wait, and the fact that (does this defeat the purpose? I say no….) you can get some work done while you’re also helping your skin look a little less like…you work so much! NO JOKE- I have one on as I type this! Here are my top three picks for the best all-natural masks out there.
This is me with LUSH’s Sacred Truth mask on. So cute, no?
LUSH
OK, not everything from the UK-based-but-available-worldwide LUSH store is totally natural; they use some artificial colors in some of their products. I’m over it. BUT their face masks are totally natural, so much so that they need to be kept in the fridge, and even then only last so long (a bit longer than they advise in the store, FYI). And you can’t buy them online- you need to go to one of their stores to get the fresh stuff. I like the Sacred Truth mask for regular weeks, and the Brazened Honey, which smells so divine I want to dive into a vat of it, is for hardcore skin repair, but ask in the store what’s best for your skin type.
I’m a total whore for their soaps too, which are cut off huge blocks and are wrapped in paper- in fact all their stuff is very minimally packaged and they ALWAYS ask if you really need a bag, since you probably don’t. This seems to be company-wide policy, as I regularly visit the LUSH stores on the Upper West Side in NYC and Greenwich CT. When I was recently in London, they asked there too. If you’re a nice, polite human being (and maybe make the salespeople laugh a bit), they’ll give you all sorts of free samples, so you can figure out what you like.
Origins
I’ve used Origins makeup for years; they make the least pore-cloggins stuff I’ve found anywhere, and it all smells fan-freaking-tastic. When I need a pick-me-up I use their anti-blemish Out of Trouble mask, which has camphor for a wake-me-up-right-now! scent, oil-abosorbing zinc oxide and sulphur (don’t worry, you can’t smell it) and salicylic acid.
Oh, and they have a new organic skin care line that looks yummy- I haven’t tried it yet though.
Neal’s Yard
Another UK import, Neal’s Yard is the ne plus ultra of organic beauty products, with great partner organisations and a commitment to organic products wherever they can make it work in their products. I like the Organic rose antioxidant mask for a mellow, feel-good, smell-better mask that reminds me to take it easy.
And if you’re looking for natural wrinkle-erasers, check out this piece on The Daily Green about my favorite eye creams/serums.

It’s often difficult to keep up with the Jonses on all this “Good Green Citizen” stuff. For the majority of us out there, we can’t possibly give all we got, but we can do things in our everyday life to make a difference. Where we are in our life, how old/young we are, where we live, and what we do – all factor in to how we can contribute (or at least minimize our impact) on the planet. Don’t get riled up if you can’t give as much as Gates, or buy eco-islands like Leo. Do the best you can where you are at. It makes a world of difference…
So how can you see if you are a good green citizen? Administer your own ECO LQ Test!
Below, I listed a farily comprehensive list of the “green” stuff I have done since I was a young girl. What’s interesting is that I have lived in three very different areas in my life: a rural Pennsylvania town, a college campus, and a big city. I obviously have become more aware of my impacts as I have aged, but even the stuff that I do now (i.e. take public transportation + walk), would virtually be impossible to do if I still lived in PA. Conclusion: Do the best you can where you are at.
And on that note, I’d love to hear about other Eco-Chick reader’s Eco LQs. Look at some examples I’ve given below and write down what you do (or don’t do) and post them here!
What I do in my everyday life NOW – (NY, NY):
- Buy eco-friendly clothing, often times from local designers at a local store
- Buy organic food at local store, often travel to green market
- Will only buy enough food for the week; will rarely waste food
- Bought 6 houseplants today at the Green Market
- Take public transportation or walk everywhere (haven’t driven a car in 4 years)
- Recycle (paper, glass, cardboard, plastic, and aluminum)
- All furniture in house is used or was found on the sidewalk
- Use energy efficient light bulbs (at least in my room)
- Charge cell phone on solar power, or when charging from wall outlet, I will take the charger out when not charging
- Have plastic on our windows to help prevent heat from escaping
- Will rarely turn on main heater, may use a small heater for localize heating
- Buy fair-trade tea or sometimes chocolate. I don’t drink coffee, but if I did…
- Mainly use organic beauty and personal care products
- Will try to eat out at locally-owned restaurants
- Use environmentally-friendly cleaning products
- Use environmentally-friendly detergents
- Shut off water when not using it
- Use a water-saving showerhead
- Shut off lights when not in use
- Give to charity
- Socially active workplace

- Shut off lights when not in use
