Who Made YOUR Pants? (Or, Shall We Say, Undies?)

PantsPink front

Victoria’s Secret drove me nuts even before they were accused of their most recent child-labor scandal. With high prices for low quality, their kinda-cheesy designs that have to be dug through to find anything cute, and their puke-pink-overload stores (hey, I like a little pink, see above but VC takes it to a level that’s just insulting to the color), I finally gave up on the retailer a few years ago.

I know I’m not the only one looking for alternatives.

Enter Who Made Your Pants, a British project (but they ship worldwide) that upcycles unused lace from the garment industry into new undies. And they benefit refugee women.

And I’m so into the way they talk about their company: C’mon, this just sounds like they are directly addressing all the unethical lingerie companies out there: “We also think that it’s not really on for anyone to be made to work in bad conditions just for a cheap pair of pants. Who could feel lovely in something made in a bad place? So we make our pants in a great place.” LOVE!!!

And these undies aren’t just making the world a better place – they are making your butt a smoother place too. They are designed to have no visible panty line (VPL), stay in place, and (GOOD GOD) be comfortable all day long. I’ve died and gone to underwear heaven!

“Who Made Your Pants is structured as a worker co-op, creating jobs and training for refugee women in Southampton. Who Made Your Pants was set up specifically to empower women. The women it employs and works with are primarily refugees, from Afghanistan, Somalia, the Sudan – often places where there have been wars. They may have been educated or worked, they may not, so their needs are all different and Who Made Your Pants’ training and support varies in relation to need.”

Organic Undies for Everyone!

Eco Boudoir
Eco Boudoir bottoms and matching cami….so pretty!

The much-loved online shop for fabulous undergarments, Figleaves, has just opened Greenleaves, dedicated to Earth-friendly undies for ladies and gents.

For women, there are both practical and fanciful bras and undies, pantyhose, nursing tops, and even padded cycling panties (who knew?) They have guy’s stuff too, but who cares about their underwear, as long as it’s clean (just kidding)!

Figleaves Bra
Bamboo bra from Chantelle (I wear Chantelle- they are super-comfy!!)

Figleaves undies
Gotta have the matching bamboo undies!

Enamore Cami
I like this Enamore cami, not only because it’s made from organic silk, but also because it has a built-in bra. Fabulous and very wearable.

Global War by Dawn Maxey

by Ann Benoit · 02/08/08

I was introduced to Dawn Maxey’s spoken word poetry at the recent AIGA Compost Modern event.

Here’s some excerpts from her very spirited poem, “Global War” about eco-hype:

But then/ just the other day,
I began to notice people at Whole Foods with entire shopping carts full of ‘organic’ and ‘go green’ items. These people are the same ones that say things like “did I bump into you? I’m sorry. I just didn’t expect this ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE dishwashing soap to be so heavy.”
I want to pour environmentally safe salt in their eyes.

In fact, I imagine a day when things get so bad you’ll live in a glass house so that everyone can see you wake up in the morning, get out of your organic soy bean bed and pack your “this is not a plastic bag”, bag. You’ll open a box of Tony the tiger’s non hydrogenated hypoallergenic free trade grain flakes, and drive your not-tested-on-animals bicycle to work. Then you’ll help Nike ‘save’ the rainforest by branding large red swooshes on all the lemurs or maybe organize a photo shoot for Abercrombie’s new cotton free cotton underwear.

Green is chic now, but when the stock market of trends crashes
no one will want to be caught dead with biodegradable polos, environmentally safe dirt, or toilet paper made from corn husks.
the earth will be just as trashed as Lindsay Lohan in a Bacardi factory
and people will care
even less

So how do you fix the problem?
Make being green
sustainable
show people that it’s not hip or trendy or fun to be green
it’s an obligation

Nice Package!

Rawganique. They sell nice packages….err…organic underwear. I thought I’d put this image up, because aside from being frustrated, Valentine’s Day is nearly a month away. What best to get for your significant other than organic undies? Looks great on! But of course, look far better on the floor. (Speaking first hand knowledge here, ladies…it’s just first hand knowledge that’s been a while…quite honestly though, it’s like riding a bicycle. Hopefully it’s one of those really great state-of the art mountain bikes with a fabulous guarantee, but we’ll take what we can get sometimes…)

Oh yeah…Rawganique has women’s wear too:
