How I Wear Eco Fashion: Journalist and Fashion Correspondent Emma Grady

Emma Grady is a multimedia journalist and freelance fashion correspondent (Discovery’s TreeHugger.com and Planet Green, her own style site Past Fashion Future, Coco Eco Magazine, and more) based in New York City. Emma’s days can get busy and she needs pretty versatile layers that can cross from relaxed to more professional, depending on what she’s up to. This outfit exemplifies those shifts: “I write during the day and often go to events at night. I’ve worn this blazer dressed up, with a black mini skirt, black tights, and heels, for fashion week and dressed down for work (as shown) with jeans,” says Emma.

Artful Undergarments: Rio Wrenn’s R.A.W. Eco Lingerie Collection

Portland, Oregon based textile designer Rio Wrenn has a unique vision for lingerie, combining modern eco friendly materials and dying techniques, antique constructions and ethical manufacturing to create her line, R.A.W. “I started R.A.W. in 2007, which is inspired by vintage undergarments ranging from the 1800′s to the 1950′s to modern day,” says Rio. Her collection of corsets, bras and undies has a special look, and with the Summer and Autumn 2010 trend of exposed undergarments, she’s right on target with perfect base layers for style mavens and lingerie fans alike.

And not only is Rio a conscious creator of unique pieces, she’s an advocate for women’s bodies and all the curves that go with them, and explained that her corsets aren’t meant to be restrictive or to reshape a body (she’s a fan of hips especially). “Corsets are actually very therapeutic, they make you stand up straight! I think people have a bad vision of corsets, but I don’t make them to be oppressive, they should be comfortable and supportive,” she says.

Each piece in R.A.W.’s collection is also a work of art and are handmade in Portland. Rio is a visual artist, but found that fine art was often out of reach to many people; fashion is a way to take a creative project and make it more accessible, wearable and affordable, she says.

I think lingerie might be the toughest thing to find in sustainable fabrics. Here are five lovelies to inspire you, since Summer weather means that bra straps will be peeking out!

Clockwise from top left: Cosabella organic cotton thong and underwire bra, g=9.8 bra and panties made from recycled pine fibers, Spreegirl bamboo underwire bra and panties, Enamore, UrbanFoxEco bamboo and vintage lace cami and panties.

And check out this cute video for Enamore!

Three Timeless & Timely Vintage Fabric Dresses

Comments No Comments

by Starre Vartan · 05/15/09

It’s Spring, so I’ve been perusing dresses, looking to add to my beloved collection of interesting and ecofriendly frocks. Here are three that are all made from vintage fabrics that are perfect RIGHT NOW.

Floralprintsml
The Maria dress from Minna has that ‘wearable sculpture’ look, with a slightly exaggerated tulip skirt and an English-rose print that is so hot right now (but is an original vintage fabric, natch). I’m going to keep my eye on Minna, a UK-based designer; poking around her collection for sale on Fashion Conscience and then her own site, I became a wee bit obsessed with owning an ethereal piece.

buttercup-yellow-gaillard-m_thumb_350
This buttercup yellow gaillard dress reminds me of the pony I learned to horseback ride on. She was an adorable, gentle palomino, and the yellow with cream dots and the sweet collar and cap sleeves (and a drop waist, I’ve not seen one of those in ages!) make me want to take a wander through the woods looking for spring flowers like Trillium and Lady’s Slipper. A combination of vintage lace and remnant cotton from Makool.

edith-1
Doucette Douvall’s hat-tip to the era of Mad Men, the Edith dress is a plaid and pretty print combo that would be flattering for the curvy or the not-so. I’m loving the Michelle Obama-like sleeveless but still modest top. Vintage materials repurposed.
