On Trend for Spring: Five Vintage Graphic Looks with Indy Flair

Sometimes it’s hard being a “green” fashionista. We love expressing ourselves with clothing, but we worry about the impact that clothes—even organic ones—have on the earth.

I started Chronologie Vintage Clothes in 2011 because I wanted to share my vision with other women. I believe all of us deserve to feel good in our skin and our clothing: When we take care of ourselves in this way and other ways, we have more to give the world.

Vintage clothes offer endless ways to express our individuality, and feel good doing it. Vintage (which is generally defined as at least 20 years old) is often better made than newer clothing, usually fits better, and is a whole lot less generic than much of what’s sold today.

Vintage clothing is more than just “used” stuff, though. In my shop, everything has to have some outstanding feature—a terrific color, fantastic fabric, unusual style, etc. I know what I like, and that’s my guiding principle in everything I buy.
Here are a few current favorites from my shop.

I found this one-of-a-kind dress last summer at a vintage market in Brussels. I got lost trying to find my family when I was done in the market. With no cell phone, I had to figure out a solution with a few euros and some bad French. This dress rode back to the US clutched in a bag on my lap…and I think it was worth all the effort.

This black silk blouse came from the same vintage market (yes, as I was lost in Brussels I was toting around a huuuge shopping bag). This blouse is so beautifully handmade by a tailor for some unknown European woman. It dates to the 1980s, but I think the cute tulip print looks like something you’d find at Urban Outfitters—very indie/hipster.

How I Wear Eco Fashion: Journalist and Fashion Correspondent Emma Grady

Emma Grady is a multimedia journalist and freelance fashion correspondent (Discovery’s TreeHugger.com and Planet Green, her own style site Past Fashion Future, Coco Eco Magazine, and more) based in New York City. Emma’s days can get busy and she needs pretty versatile layers that can cross from relaxed to more professional, depending on what she’s up to. This outfit exemplifies those shifts: “I write during the day and often go to events at night. I’ve worn this blazer dressed up, with a black mini skirt, black tights, and heels, for fashion week and dressed down for work (as shown) with jeans,” says Emma.

Artful Undergarments: Rio Wrenn’s R.A.W. Eco Lingerie Collection

Portland, Oregon based textile designer Rio Wrenn has a unique vision for lingerie, combining modern eco friendly materials and dying techniques, antique constructions and ethical manufacturing to create her line, R.A.W. “I started R.A.W. in 2007, which is inspired by vintage undergarments ranging from the 1800′s to the 1950′s to modern day,” says Rio. Her collection of corsets, bras and undies has a special look, and with the Summer and Autumn 2010 trend of exposed undergarments, she’s right on target with perfect base layers for style mavens and lingerie fans alike.

And not only is Rio a conscious creator of unique pieces, she’s an advocate for women’s bodies and all the curves that go with them, and explained that her corsets aren’t meant to be restrictive or to reshape a body (she’s a fan of hips especially). “Corsets are actually very therapeutic, they make you stand up straight! I think people have a bad vision of corsets, but I don’t make them to be oppressive, they should be comfortable and supportive,” she says.

Each piece in R.A.W.’s collection is also a work of art and are handmade in Portland. Rio is a visual artist, but found that fine art was often out of reach to many people; fashion is a way to take a creative project and make it more accessible, wearable and affordable, she says.
