These three impressive up-and-coming Australian fashion labels are bringing fresh, hip, colorful garments to the Southern Hemisphere and beyond – and they’re doing it with ethics and sustainability as a top priority. Ginger & Smart, POL and ALAS are three examples of Aussie designers producing stylish, high-quality clothing and accessories.

POL

Feminine florals, soft pinks and classic stripes mix with edgier pieces in black and neutrals in the sustainable clothing line POL, a collaboration between Australian and Scandinavian creatives. POL clothing and accessories are manufactured in Australia using natural fiber fabrics like bamboo, linen and denim, focusing on “experimenting with the female form via texture and organic fibers, dressing silhouettes with a design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and wearability.”

POL is also accessible to the average woman, with accessories starting at just $17 and garments starting at $70.

ALAS

ALAS (All Light All Shadow) is an Aussie sleepwear label inspired by the nature of change – the phases of the moon, the movement of the tides and our own travels. These nightgowns, tops and pants aren’t just comfy, they’re so gorgeous it almost seems like a waste to only wear them behind closed doors. The cotton used to make these garments is grown, spun, woven and dyed in India and either GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or Fairtrade accredited. That means it’s free of dangerous chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers. The dyes used to give the clothing its brilliant color are free of harmful AZOs and formaldehyde.

Ginger & Smart

This Sydney-based label founded by sisters Alexandra and Genevieve Smart is all about bold graphic prints, from rainbow-hued geometric patterns to dreamy pastel watercolors. Ginger & Smart’s aesthetic is both playful and polished, featuring modern silhouettes every bit as chic as those produced by big-name, non-eco-friendly labels. One of the few high-end Australian designer labels accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia, Ginger & Smart have committed to ensuring that everyone involved in the production of their garments receives fair wages and works in decent conditions.

“Since we’ve been labelling our garments with the Ethical Clothing Australia swing tag, we’ve seen an increase in interest from shoppers and many have commented that they’d prefer to buy Ginger & Smart over other brands that aren’t transparent about the ethical production of their garments,” Geneveive told Ethical Clothing Australia.
