Soul Track Thursday: Priscilla Ahn is “Fine On The Outside”

Priscilla Ahn’s voice has soothed me through many hard study sessions, heart-scathing loneliness, and stressful summer afternoons. The folk artist’s work is full of relatable lyrics, and soul strumming, naked guitar rhythms. Her most popular song “Dream” is a ballad about love lost, which will hopefully be regained. Her voice aims at the core of what it means to be feeling beings.

So, it is more than appropriate that Studio Ghibli, the animation studio that brought to life one of the most feminist and fictional eco-warriors of all time in their cult classic Disney film, Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind—if you haven’t seen it, RENT IT NOW—is using Ahn’s music as the first English theme song for the new Ghibli movie, When Marnie Was There. Their new movie focuses on the wonderful summer friendship of two girls, one of them a ghost.

Fine on The Outside, the theme song for When Marnie Was There, was written by the artist while she was still in high school. It’s for those of us who have lived outside of the cliques, the norms, the Jones’s, or the rat race. It is revealingly soothing, and perfect for a slow de-stressing on a soulful, but hectic Thursday afternoon.
