Just like with fashion and accessories, makeup trends for Fall 2009 are dramatic, edgy and intense. Deep purples, blues and silvery metallics are in for eyes, nails and lips and many of our favorite natural and organic cosmetic lines have just what you need to get the look without sacrificing your high standards.

Smoldering smoky eyes have been big for a while, but this season, take them a little further with shades of blue and purple that complement your complexion. Fair-skinned blondes will get along with blue-green while pale brunettes should seek out blue-purple. Olive-toned skin looks great with a variety of blue shades, particularly navy, while those with brown skin can have fun with brighter shades.

This Sephora tutorial gives step-by-step instructions on how to get a smoky eye with color. Try it with Everyday Minerals eyeshadow in Twilight Kiss, Shady Violets and Maple and Mums or check out the gorgeous plum and gray shades in the NVEY ECO Organic Creative Eye Color System. Pair this look with a nude lip for maximum impact.

Matte lipstick in deep shades of red, berry and purple are seriously eye-catching without looking too goth chick circa 1995. Just like with the smoky eyes, you’ll want to balance the intensity by keeping a light hand on the rest of your face – try a pale sheer eyeshadow and some mascara. Try it with Dr. Hauschka in Effectuoso.

Pewter is the season’s hottest shade for nails. Check out Priti’s Powderpuff Cactus and Oleaster. There’s also Constant Nymph, which is sort of gunmental-esque, and Old Man Cactus, a shimmery silver. Priti Polish is formulated without toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde.

If metallics are not your thing, there are plenty of other gorgeous jewel and earth tones to choose from. Acquarella water-based polish comes in luscious shades like Hot Chocolate, Vixen, Void and Sparkling Cider. If you’re feeling extra-trendy, try the ‘moon manicure’ that was so popular on Fall 2009 runways.
