This summer is all about soft kissable lips. Every YouTube beauty guru swears by their favorite brand of lip-scrubbies. Some of those scrubs may boast wonderful reviews—and a cult following, but some of those ingredients can be doing the opposite of what we want.
Take a common ingredient in the Fresh Sugar Lip Polish: alcohol. Alcohol is inherently drying and can speed up cell degradation in all of its forms. Lip scrubs can also contain polymers, fillers, and preservatives that your body doesn’t really need, especially close so close to your mouth.
The main ingredient in most lip scrubs is sugar, specifically the same brown/white sugar some of us have in cupboards for baking—which means they’re easy to make. Lip scrubs can be a great addition to a green beauty routine. A quick Google search will fill your browser with all sorts of great DIY recipes, so I decided to try my own with my favorite beauty oil: hemp.
If you are sensitive to sugar, or just don’t trust the multi-syllabic preservatives so common in large batch skin care, this simple sugar scrub recipe is for you! The sugar in the recipe below not only helps to exfoliate the lips and since coconut is full of antioxidants, you bet it can contribute to keeping your lips smooth and healthy longer.
Made from good and accessible ingredients, this scrub is easy to make and leaves anyone with soft and kissable lips.
Things you’ll need:
- Coconut sugar
- A spoon
- A container to stir your lip scrub
- (optional) Vanilla Extract (look for organic if you can find it)
- Olive or Hemp oil
Grab your tablespoon and dip it right into the coconut sugar. If you’re sharing with a friend I suggest the whole spoonful, if not, just a bit will work. Then proceed to add the hemp/olive oil to your sugar. Stir it a bit. And if you wanna add that irresistible cupcake smell, a few drops of vanilla will do!
You may be asking why Hemp or Olive oils? I love hemp because it doesn’t clog pores when applied to the skin. It also helps with blood circulation making it perfect for plumping lips! As you know, olive oil is long lasting and moisturizing, perfect for keeping your lips moisturized for days.
