White for Autumn? Yes, with Miakoda New York: How I Wear Eco Fashion
I love wearing white—and shades of cream—year-round. And in case you’re wondering if it’s “proper” to do so, look no further than Emily Post’s etiquette page, where the mannerly get their rules. They write, regarding white after Labor Day:
Of course you can wear white after Labor Day, and it makes perfect sense to do so in climates where September’s temperatures are hardly fall-like. Even in the dead of winter in northern New England the fashionable wear white wools, cashmeres, and down-filled parkas. The true interpretation is “wear what’s appropriate—for the weather, the season, or the occasion.” So on a blistering Indian Summer September day here in Vermont, you’ll catch us wearing our “whites”.
So this past weekend, on a warm October day, I took to the streets of Berkeley, California, in Miakoda New York’s beautifully soft organic cotton dress from the line’s Sand Circles collection. It’s an asymmetrical beauty, cut high on one side (perfect for showing off your cool leggings underneath—or in my case, a pretty slip.
Sometimes it’s nice to just wander around your neighborhood and notice the little things: like the perfectly placed succulents on the white steps above; they remind me of walks I’ve taken in Mediterranean cities.

I ended up down by the water, at the Berkeley Aquatic Center, where the ducks, geese and swans were enjoying the late afternoon light.
I accessorized my Miakoda dress with some found horn earrings by Kevia and a fair-trade beaded necklace that I pinned into my hair and wore as a low-key headpiece. You can see the pretty, subtle circles print of the dress at my shoulder. Hand-drawn and so delicate, it’s all about the details when you wear all one shade.
