Love this! Repost via @monicarosquillas: Living sustainably doesn’t mean I live a life of deprivation. Just today I got back from traveling locally, which means no planes were taken, but I got to see a beautiful seaside town. I’m wearing an outfit I like that also happens to be made up of second hand pieces and a 6 year old coat. I ate very well, especially so because it was a plant based meal made with sustainably grown food. And I didn’t buy anything because I didn’t feel the need to.
The point is, we can enjoy life without destroying it.
A sustainable life doesn’t have to be a life of sacrifices and deprivation, it’s only that if that’s how you see it. In fact, sustainable living ensures we’re NOT depriving ourselves and other beings from the most important thing there is: a habitable, healthy planet. #climatecrisis
If corporations can be granted the rights of personhood, then why can’t the Earth? In @iam_jessica_williamson latest article, she highlights #rivers, #mountains and #lakes that are are being granted the right to live. And we say, it’s about time. Future-oriented Debbie Mielewski and her team at @ford worked to develop a bio-based foam using soybean oil that would meet durability and performance standards while reducing reliance on petroleum: “The biomaterial has helped Ford reduce its annual petroleum oil usage by more than 5 million pounds and its carbon dioxide emissions by more than 20 million pounds. The soy-foam seats can provide a 67 percent reduction in volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.” Link in bio to read more! #ford #cars #soybeanoil #futureoriented
@pinatex Pineapple “Leather Alternative” promotes a circular system, made from byproduct pineapple leaves and processed into a leather-like material. “In the Philippines, long fibers are extracted through a process called decortication by manufacturer Ananas Anam, get degummed and undergo an industrial process to become a non-woven mesh. Then it’s sent to Spain for finishing. The textile becomes soft, flexible, and durable, much like animal leathers. From there, a resin coating covers the leather providing wettability, durability, and elasticity to the final product.” Link in bio for the full article!

A spa day at home? Here are seven green ideas to perk up your bathroom! “Instead of needing to schedule expensive treatments every time you need a break, putting your spa right in your own bathroom is a great way to enjoy that relaxation when you need it most. Even better, it’s possible to create a resort-inspired feel to your bathroom while still staying eco-friendly.” Link in bio!

Let’s talk about Silk. How sustainable is this fiber, honing in on its production and red flags?
“The process begins with the Mulberry tree. Silk worms feed exclusively on the leaves of the white mulberry tree and spin themselves into a cocoon of long and silky thread. These cocoons are then bathed in warm/hot water (killing the worm inside) which loosens the long singular thread from the cocoon. That’s right, each cocoon is made from one long thread. Depending on the form of silk production, whether industrial or small batch, the silk worm’s threads are then spun into a white or ivory silk fabric that is ready to take on a plethora of colors.” Link in bio for the full article!

On how a spontaneous first attempt at surfing brought out an adventurous, curious side: “I didn’t care about falling. The risk-taker in me was set free, and she was overjoyed. I paddled with all my might, learned to grab the “leash” when my board got away from me, and floated 15 feet from a pod of dolphins. (Though if I’m being honest, for a second I was sure they were sharks.) Nothing could faze me, because among those violent waves, I was totally at peace.
Later that night, I swore I could still feel the leash tugging at my ankle, the waves whooshing under my back. I was totally connected to something amazing, and nobody else mattered. My risk-taker was reborn, and this time I’m not letting her get away.”

Author Stacey Harshman
of Crowning Glory experimented with how different hair colors can bring about a varying reaction from the world through own curated social experiment. “She wore 4 wigs and spent a week in each. She went to the same places and the same time, but each week with different colored hair. On the 5th week she went sans wig in only her natural hair. Because she couldn’t remain objective in reporting the data she had a spy follow her too, logging all sorts of data ranging from people’s expressions to their comments (said in front of her face most of the time).” Read more about Stacey’s book and reactions via link in bio!
